Futsal in the USA

It is a form of futbol that is beginning to catch on in informal and formal environments around the country and in Houston.

It goes by many names, including futbol sala, futbol salon, mini-soccer or for the purposes of this column, futsal.

Futsal is a five-a-side game on a field or court with the dimensions of a basketball court. The ball is smaller than a normal soccer ball and is harder and considered a low-bounce ball.

The game is popular in Brazil, and there is a link to the soccer culture and the way Brazilians play the game that goes back to futsal. Brazilian legends Pelé, Zico and Socrates have connections to the game. Did you know the United States has a team devoted to futsal?
